Renny Harlin could use a boost. While he scored some decent notices for icy horror **The Dyatlov Pass **Incident last year, both critics and filmgoers have greeted this year’s The Legend Of Hercules with ambivalence. Undeterred, he’s pushing on into one his favourite playgrounds, the crime action thriller, with **Fallen Cross{ =nofollow}.

David Christopher O’Neill wrote the script, which follows a reformed mafia enforcer named Timothy Cole. As you might expect given his situation, life isn’t easy. Having ditched working for the crime syndicate he once served – the Chicago Cross – he’s languishing in prison and trying to put his past behind him.

But then members of the Cross start to threaten his family, so our hero must find a way to break out of jail and track down the criminals before they can kill his children. And that means picking up his old, murderous ways…

Fallen Cross is a thrilling, smart, and character driven story with the kind of deep emotions and bad ass action I love to get my hands on,” Harlin says in a statement picked up by Screen International.

According to the director, there are the makings of a potential franchise here, though he’ll have to hope the first film makes an impact. He’ll kick off shooting later this year.
