Renee Zellweger has mostly appeared on the big screen in her career, with a few roles in TV movies and the odd guest shot on its smaller cousin. But the lure of longer character arcs and the resources of Netflix has tempted her to star in the first season of new anthology series What/If.

Mike Kelley came up with the idea for the show, described as a social thriller that explores the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things. Each season will tackle a different morality tale inspired by culturally consequential source material, and the power of a single fateful decision to change the trajectory of an entire life. Robert Zemeckis is among the executive producers.

Not much is known yet about who Zellweger will play in the series, though The Hollywood Reporter has heard that the character will be called Ann and the plot may focus on newlyweds.

The actress will next be seen as Judy Garland in Judy, which has yet to lock down a confirmed date, but should be on screens next year.
