Sad news for fans of cult movies: Man Bites Dog director Remy Balvaux has died.

Though he only directed Dog, that one film sent shockwaves through cinema with its tale of a grinning serial killer and the documentary crew who are slowly drawn into his web of terror.

The film showed at Cannes in 1992 and went on to win several awards, but Balvaux did not helm any other movies. Instead, he switched to directing adverts, where he won a load of industry plaudits.

"He leaves us one masterpiece and tons of regrets," his family said in a statement. He was 38.
