Cats rule some corners of the internet, so why not two feline-adjacent news stories in one day? Following on from the new Secret Life Of Pets 2 trailer comes word that Rebel Wilson is the latest unexpected addition to musical adaptation Cats.
Wilson's casting might not exactly sway those who are unsure that the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical should even become a movie, but regardless she'll play old Gumbie cat Jennyanydots, who has a reputation for being lazy, except at night when she strikes up a legion of hobbies, teaches mice to knit and has cockroaches as boy scouts. So during the day, she feels like the cat many people have at home, and then... not so much.
She joins Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Taylor Swift, Judi Dench, Idris Elba and more in the film, which will add more to the tale adapted from Old Possum's Books Of Practical Cats into Lloyd Webber's show and now the film, which has a script by Lee Hall.
Tom Hooper, who had success with Les Miserables, is tackling the challenge, even if we don't know quite how the cats will be brought to life on screen – is anyone ready for McKellen in a tight catsuit and fur? Cats heads to our screens on 20 December next year. Wilson has a few movies on the way, including rom-com twist Isn't It Romantic? (15 February), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels update The Hustle (10 May) and Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit, which will be on screens next year but hasn't locked in a specific date yet.
