Of all the movies you might think would be natural choices for a spin-off show on the SyFy Channel, we’re not sure Twelve Monkeys was ever on the list, purely because of its wackadoodle Terry Gilliam Style. The gang at SyFy clearly disagrees, because the US cable network is cooking up a pilot for a potential series{ =nofollow}.

For those who have not enjoyed the warped tale of sickness, time travel and lunacy cooked up by His Gilliam-ness and writers David and Janet Peoples, the 1995 film starred Bruce Willis as James Cole, a prisoner serving time in a future world ravaged by a terrible virus.

He’s offered a pardon if he’ll travel back in time – through some decidedly unsafe technology – and discover information key to stopping terrorist group the Army Of The Twelve Monkeys. The dodgy machinery flings him back to an earlier time than he expects and he ends up in a mental institution, where he meets the lovely Dr. Railly (Madeleine Stowe) and the crazed Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), who is connected to the viral attack...

Two of the original film’s producers, Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle, are aboard to oversee things, and Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett will write what is planned as a 90-minute pilot aimed at kicking off a series.

The story certainly has a lot of potential, but we have doubts that anyone can match the twisted visuals of Gilliam...
