Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast

Of all the films we thought might get the TV treatment as the wave of small screen adaptations and spin-offs continues, Jonathan Glazer's sunburned gangster drama Sexy Beast is not a title we saw attracting attention. But here we are: Paramount TV across the pond is developing a prequel show.

Glazer's 2001 film, written by Louis Mellis and David Scinto, followed Gal Dove (Ray Winstone), an ex-criminal who had moved to Spain with his wife DeeDee (Amanda Redman) to start a new life, and Don Logan (Ben Kingsley), an old criminal associate who aggressively recruits him for a heist job on behalf of crime lord Teddy Bass (Ian McShane). The film is best remembered for cracking work from all involved and, shall we say, a volcanic torrent of swearing, particularly from Kingsley, who scored an Oscar nomination for his performance.

The potential series, which has The Sopranos veteran writer Michael Caleo attached to script, will trace how Gal initially formed a partnership with Don, kicks off his work for Teddy and meets DeeDee.

It's early days for the TV project, as the producers are still shopping it around cable and streaming networks in the States. We can see it needing somewhere like Amazon, Netflix, or, say, HBO simply to properly portray Don.
