That buzzer going off means another movie is being turned into a musical and starting the long journey to the stage. Today, it's the turn of 1988 rom-com Mystic Pizza.
The film, which launched Julia Roberts' career, also starred Annabeth Gish and Lili Taylor as waitresses at a Mystic, Connecticut, pizza parlor, their working class lives in stark contrast to the town’s country club set. The cast also features a brief appearance from a young Matt Damon as one of the rich types who crops up.
As for the musical version, Gordon Greenberg is directing, and co-writing the book with actor/writer Sas Goldberg, the pair working from the story and characters originally created by
Amy Holden Jones. And the music will come from an experienced source, with rocker Melissa Etheridge set to write the tunes.
"MGM’s Mystic Pizza is a seminal film for an entire generation of young people looking to distinguish themselves in a rapidly changing world," Greenberg tells Deadline. "Adapting Amy Holden Jones' original screenplay for the stage with rock icon Melissa Etheridge, a beacon of strength and raw musical energy, and the brilliantly hilarious Sas Goldberg, is a dream collaboration on a story that is as relevant today as it was when we all first experienced it."
No details were announced as to when or even where this one might debut once it's ready to get on its feet, but it follows a long tradition of movies becoming musicals which recently included the likes of Pretty Woman (can an Erin Brockovich musical be far behind?) Beetlejuice and Mean Girls.
