Summit Entertainment have picked up the rights to Arena, an intriguing sci-fi pitch from first-time writers, Toby Wagstaff and Darren Howell.
The film revolves around a group of modern-day soldiers who are transported to a world where they are forced to enter a gladiatorial arena filled with warriors plucked from myriad historical eras and histories. Which sounds pretty cool – if potentially very big-budget – to us. Frankly, we’re surprised that more gladiatorial movies didn’t follow along in the wake of 2000’s Gladiator, and this one has a nice sci-fi twist to it.
But there is a danger, of course, that there’s little more to this than bustin’ heads and breakin’ limbs, but we’ll find out in due time.
The film will be produced by the writers’ manager, Jim Thompson, along with the increasingly prolific production company, Benderspink.
