After years of talk about either a Gremlins sequel or reboot, it now looks like the actual fresh creature content we'll be seeing is an animated series. WarnerMedia – which is getting into the streaming world to compete with Disney+, Netflix, Amazon and the like – has announced a show.
Don't necessarily go expecting the further adventures of Zach Galligan's Billy and co., however, as Variety has heard there's a very different take pitched here. Cold Comes The Night writer/director Tze Chun (who has TV bona fides via shows such as Gotham and Once Upon A Time) apparently plans a period piece that follows a young version of Keye Luke's shop owner Mr. Wing as he has adventures with Mogwai Gizmo.
Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television are feeding this one after midnight to see what happens. And who knows? If it's a success, there's scope for a new Gremlins film to take the animated route. After all, who knows what chaos could be shown with a 'toon landscape? There's no indication yet on whether Joe Dante (who directed both Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch) would be involved, nor do we know when this one will actually be available to watch.
