The real-life tragedy that spawned both movies bearing the name The Amityville Horror has also led to various horror films of varying success through the years. Now someone wants to make a film that actually chronicles the events of the original tale, with Wonderfilm Media announcing Amityville 1974.

With The Remaining's Casey La Scala in the director's chair working from his own script, the film will be based on the murderous tale of Ronald DeFeo Jr., who shot all six members of his family on a fateful November night. His actions were set out in Jay Anson's book The Amityville Horror, which saw a family move into the house where DeFeo Jr. lived, only to be driven out by terrifying supernatural forces.

"This is a story that takes its jumping off point from the true facts surrounding the DeFeo tragedy, but also focuses on the human drama that took place inside a family as they were relentlessly stalked by a terrifying evil," says the writer/director, who will have his cameras rolling this November, while the production company will look to sell the rights at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.
