This Empire correspondent has just returned from watching the wonderful Ray Stevenson shoot pretty much everyone on the planet in Punisher War Zone (this is NOT an official Empire review, folks; that will be along in the next month or so) – and he’s set to continue his homicidal ways by trying to kill Denzel Washington in The Book Of Eli.

The 44 year-old Brit has become the latest actor to join the sci-fi actioner, which will be directed by Albert and Allen Hughes. He’ll play an enforcer sent to kill Washington’s title character, a heroic nomad who must travel across a post-apocalyptic wasteland to protect a sacred book that holds the key to mankind’s future.

The more we hear about this film, the more we think it could well be very, very cool and, at long last, America’s answer to Mad Max. Certainly, Stevenson’s casting means that the film is now officially 27% more badass than it was yesterday – and we’re factoring the presence of Mila Kunis and Gary Oldman in there.

Shooting – hopefully, a LOT of shooting – will begin in February on the Warner Bros. movie.
