Though the romantic comedy genre continues to pop its head above the parapet on the big screen once in a while, Netflix has quietly become the home for various creators looking to breathe fresh life into it and feature some different faces. Surprisingly, though, it's chosen to launch the first trailer for one of its latest examples a mere two weeks from it landing on the service. See the trailer for Always Be My Maybe below.

Co-written by stars Ali Wong and Randall Park alongside Michael Golamco, Always Be My Maybe tells the story of childhood friends Sasha (Wong) and Marcus (Park), who have a falling out and don’t speak for 15 years. But when Sasha, now a celebrity chef in Los Angeles, returns to her hometown of San Francisco to open a new restaurant, she runs into her old pal – a happily complacent musician still living at home and working for his dad. Though the two are reluctant to reconnect, they soon find the old sparks, and maybe some new ones, are there.

With Nahnatchka Khan – who created US sitcom Fresh Off The Boat, which stars Park – in the director's chair, the film looks to have a light, fun tone and showcases the charisma of the two leads. Plus it gives us a chance to see the entertaining spectacle of Keanu Reeves acting like a weirdo (and not killing everyone in sight... At least, we think).

Always Be My Maybe will be on Netflix from 31 May.
