Michael Radford, last seen directing highbrow Shakespeare adaptation The Merchant Of Venice, is heading off to the Spanish Civil War.

He’s attached to La Mula, adapted from Spanish writer Juan Eslava Galan’s novel by the novelist himself.

The story – which is based on the experiences of Galan’s father – sees the main character forced to fight for both sides during the conflict. The titular mule is an animal he finds on the battlefield, takes pity on and hides among his battalions other animals.
