Rachel Weisz To Play Jackie Kennedy?

In a rather promising piece of casting, Rachel Weisz is set to play Jackie Kennedy in, er, Jackie, with her fiance Darren Aronofsky attached to direct the film. It's their first collaboration since the wonderful/dreadful* The Fountain, and seems to us like a rather good fit for Weisz as roles go.

The script was written by Noah Oppenheim and covers Jackie's life in the days immediately following the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas in 1963. It's said to show the iconic First Lady at "both her most vulnerable and her most graceful" (according to EW) as she bears up under the pressure of horrific circumstances and unprecedented public attention (even for her).

There were rumours that this would be a HBO TV movie produced by Spielberg, but that now seems to be entirely wrong. So can the British Weisz play America's sweetheart? Well, yes, almost certainly. It may in fact be an odder match for Aronofsky, and it will be interesting to see how he does with the female-led Black Swan between now and then. In any case, let's hope that this second Weisz-Aronofsky professional pairing lives up to / erases the memories of The Fountain.*
