No, before you start thinking it, Rachel Weisz is not starring in and producing a TV adaptation of the long-running Radio 4 celebrity/political impersonation series. Instead, she's planning something that could be seen as more controversial – a TV drama based on David Cronenberg's 1988 thriller Dead Ringers.

Cronenberg's film featured double the Jeremy Irons action, as he played twin gynecologists who both begin a relationship with the same woman. In the series version, Weisz will play the double lead role of the Mantle twins. They share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes — including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics — in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s healthcare to the forefront.

Weisz hatched the idea and Normal People's Alice Birch is writing the script for the new series, which has the backing of Annapurna Television and Amazon. It's early days, but this could be a fascinating fresh take on the subject, even if there will still be complaints about remaking Cronenberg's original.
