The protagonists in the film might have to stay quiet, but critics and now audiences have been vocal about John Krasinski's latest directing job, horror thriller A Quiet Place. The movie opened to an impressive $50 million this weekend.

Shot for $17 million (before marketing etc.), it's a great start for the movie, already being hailed as one of the best of the year. The success of the new arrival pushed Ready Player One from the top spot, but it only slipped to second, adding $25 million and scraping close to $100 million in the States alone.

New comedy Blockers landed third, earning $21.4 million, essentially making its production budget back in its first weekend. Black Panther, still crossing milestones (it overtook Titanic on the domestic chart), fell one position to fourth and $8.4 million. Faith-based drama I Can Only Imagine dropped to fifth with $8.3 million.

Sixth was Tyler Perry's Acrimony, on $8 million, while based-on-truth drama Chappaquiddick entered the chart at seventh, taking home $6.2 million. Sherlock Gnomes fell to eighth on $5.6 million, with Pacific Rim Uprising slipping to ninth from fifth via $4.9 million. Isle Of Dogs wrapped up the top 10 with $4.6 million.
