While Quentin Tarantino has been having issues with China demanding he slice scenes out of Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood (it's currently at a stalemate and listed as "postponed"), he's going in the other direction for a new cut of of the movie that will hit American and Canadian cinemas this weekend. Ten minutes of new material will premiere as part of a limited re-release.
There's no word so far on whether the same will happen over here, but cinemagoers at 1,000 screens in North America will get to see new footage spanning four scenes, bumping the film's running time to 171 minutes.
The movie, which sees Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie as denizens of 1969 Hollywood navigating a changing industry against the backdrop of the Manson family's crimes, has been a successful one for the filmmaker, earning more than $368 million worldwide. "Audiences have shown tremendous support for this movie, and we look forward to offering them another opportunity to see the film as it’s meant to be seen – in theaters on the big screen – with more sights and sounds of the sixties from Quentin Tarantino as an added treat," says Sony Pictures president of domestic distribution Adrian Smith. We'll have to wait and see if the extended cut makes it to UK screens (chances are it's more for awards season) or if we'll have to wait until it lands on home entertainment formats. And there's also the question of whether he'll pull a Hateful Eight and re-cut the movie into a miniseries for Netflix.
