Quentin Tarantino. Star Trek. Beyond the director's avowed love of nostalgia and geeky side, we're not sure we see the ready connection between the two. But he apparently does, and has been talking to Paramount and JJ Abrams about an idea for a new Trek movie.

And according to Deadline, the studio is taking this seriously enough – who wouldn't when you have the chance to get Tarantino involved with the venerable franchise? – to convene a writers room to hear the director's idea and start to crank out a script. There's a chance that if he likes the results, he might even direct it, though we question whether QT would want count it among his own films, since he's planning to make a limited number of movies.

Chances are he'll end up taking a story credit and producing, and the bigger question would be where this might fit into the universe of Trek – nothing has been said about the concept at this stage, so we don't know if it'll use Abrams rebooted crew or find some other corner to explore.

Tarantino himself, meanwhile, is gearing up to direct his ninth film, an ensemble period drama set in Los Angeles that Sony will handle. It recently snagged a release date of 19 August, 2019.
