Confirmed at the start of this month as heading our way for 2016, much of the scuttlebut for The Purge 3 has suggested it might be a prequel rather than a sequel. Not so, according to producer Brad Fuller. "We don't know anything about that," he told Collider. But he does know about a second **Ouija, to follow last year's critically derided but typically lucrative teen horror.
The reason a Purge prequel is on commenters' minds is that we don't yet know much about the New Founding Fathers. The mysterious dark government initiated the annual Purge as an occasion for violent Americans to vent their urges, thus reducing crime the rest of the year. The story of the first Purge, it seems, is something a lot of people are interested in seeing.
But they'll have to wait. "I read that too," says Fuller, "[but] the material we're considering now is not the night of the first Purge." What we might possibly expect, however, is a direct continuation of The Purge: Anarchy, returning the focus to Frank Grillo's character.
"We loved working with him and we thought he was so good in that role," the producer explains. "If it works to have him back we would be really excited about that."
With more than a year to go until its release, the third Purge is coming together more slowly than previously, so clearly there are still plenty of details - like a screenplay - to nail down. Of the Ouija sequel Fuller is even less revealing, bar the ominous portent that "Ouija 2 is coming..."
The Purge 3, directed once again by James DeMonaco, is out in the US on July 1 next year. More details on that and Ouija 2 as they come across the ether...
