The first teaser trailer for Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3D arrived across the pond back in January, but only hit online in an unofficial, bootleg, YouTubetastic capacity. Now, finally, we get a chance to enjoy the madness clearly thanks to a proper release.
Laser-targeting its audience to perfection, this camp-tastic trailer knows what it needs to do: A) take the mickey out of the 3D concept; B) deliver good looking teens getting terrified of toothy, swarming little swimmers and C) offer up a few money shots of the fish in action.
The plot, such as it is, finds sleepy Lake Victoria invaded by two very different hordes of troublemakers. One is comprised of spring break students looking to booze up, hook up and, most likely, throw up. The other is a pack of hungry piranha (“They hunt in packs,” as Christopher Lloyd helpfully explains in the trailer) looking for a good meal. Cue bloody water trouble for the likes of Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss and Dina Meyer.
Our only real problem is that some of the effects look like they belong in a bad TV movie from the US SyFy Channel, but since the film’s not out until August, we’re sure plenty more work has been done on them since this footage arrived.
