It’s been one of the most talked-about movies of the last year, and has made a major splash in 2021’s awards nominations – but UK audiences haven’t yet had a chance to see Emerald Fennell’s satirical revenge thriller Promising Young Woman. Since cinemas have been closed, the film – like many others – has continued to have its release date pushed back, and even though picturehouses look set to start opening again in the coming months, Fennell’s film is now heading straight to home viewing. Promising Young Woman is the latest major movie – following the likes of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and The United States Vs Billie Holiday – to head straight to Sky Cinema and NOW (formerly Now TV) in the UK.
The film will be streaming exclusively on Sky and NOW from 16 April – just over three weeks away. Fennell’s film stars Carey Mulligan as Cassie, a woman who turns the tables on predatory ‘nice guys’, with twists, turns and revelations that have kept audiences elsewhere conversing for months. If it’s a shame that this one won’t be seen on the big screen, at least UK audiences can now join those conversations as the Oscars and BAFTAs loom. Elsewhere in the cast are the likes of Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Connie Britton, Adam Brody, Laverne Cox, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
The release of Promising Young Woman will also show Brit audiences exactly what Fennell is capable of as a film director – not that she’s a totally new creative voice. Though this is her first feature, Fennell was showrunner on Killing Eve Season 2, played Nurse Patsy on the BBC’s Call The Midwife, and has most recently been seen as Camilla Parker Bowles in Seasons 3 and 4 of The Crown. Next up, she’s heading to DC to write the Zatanna movie, and she’s also written the West End’s new Cinderella musical with Andrew Lloyd Webber. Phew. First things first, the Oscars…
