In his recent career, Nicolas Cage has swung between the manic likes of Mandy and the more reflective, lower-key films such as the soon-to-land Pig. Prisoners Of The Ghostland, from the trailer at least, looks to fall firmly in the former category. Take a look...
Directed by Japanese helmer Sion Sono (making his English language debut), the film is set in a post-apocalyptic future and opens in the treacherous frontier city of Samurai Town. There, a ruthless bank robber (Cage) is sprung from jail by wealthy warlord The Governor (Bill Moseley), whose adopted granddaughter Bernice (Sofia Boutella) has gone missing. The Governor offers the prisoner his freedom in exchange for retrieving the runaway. Strapped into a leather suit that will self-destruct within five days, the bandit sets off on a journey to find the young woman — and his own path to redemption.
With shades of Escape From New York, this would appear to be a vibrant, madcap romp. The film will arrive in UK cinemas and via digital on 17 September, following a FrightFest premiere on 28 August.
