The latest film version of Jane Austen's most famous work has finally debuted online, and it looks like they've done her proud. Pride and Prejudice stars Keira Knightley and Matthew McFadyen as the prideful and prejudiced pair, with able support from the likes of Rosamund Pike, Donald Sutherland, Brenda Blethyn and Judi Dench. This version always had its work cut out, especially in this country, to live up to the high standards of the 1995 BBC series, which not only provided an excellent interpretation of the novel, but turned Colin Firth into a sex symbol with nothing more than a floppy shirt and a few gallons of water. However, the filmmakers have clearly taken that lesson onboard, with scenes of Mr Darcy (McFadyen) and Elizabeth Bennet (Knightley) in the pouring rain, and one clear nod to the BBC series where McFadyen strides along, collarless and shirt open to the navel (well, practically). Which isn't to say that this has nothing new to offer. Knightley appears to fit the role surprisingly well, while McFadyen looks moody, Blethyn (as Mrs Bennet) has hysterics, Sutherland (as Mr Bennet) looks slightly stoned and Dench channels Queen Elizabeth to play the odious Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Have a look for yourself here.
