The reaction to news that Lionsgate and the rights holders were planning another Mighty Morphin Power Rangers film might have been a collective yawn or shaking of heads, but that isn’t stopping anyone from going ahead. The project now has a writing team, in the shape of superhero scripting veterans Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz{ =nofollow}.

Miller and Stentz have worked on the likes of X-Men: First Class and the first Thor film, and their hiring offers some hope that the film might actually tackle bigger things than just the usual high schoolers fighting off evil monsters. But they’re not alone: Roberto Orci, who recently parted ways with writing / producing partner Alex Kurtzman, and is still linked with directing the next Star Trek pic, is aboard to oversee story development.

Little is known about the plan for the new movie, aside from an apparent drive to re-envision the Rangers while keeping to their core mission of saving the world by combining their powers. We doubt all involved would want to harness the idea for a 21 Jump Street-style comedy version, but we might actually watch that.

The writers, who have form with Orci after working on Fringe, are also part of the developing new Terminator TV series and various film projects in the works, including drafts of the** Top Gun** sequel and The Fall Guy.
