The blockbuster season is well and truly over across the pond, with the big figures of summer replaced by quieter launches and smaller cash intakes. Horror pic The Possessio****n managed to stay atop the US box office, earning $9.5 million. Lawless’ moonshining brothers held on to second place with $6 million. Third went to new Bradley Cooper / Zoe Saldana drama The Words, which launched with a mild $5 million. The Expendables were pushed to fourth with $4.7 million and The Bourne Legacy fell to fifth with $4 million.

ParaNorman dropped one place to sixth, earning $3.8 million, while The Odd Life Of Timothy Green was down to seventh and $3.6 million. The Campaign clung to eighth with $3.5 million, while The Dark Knight Rise****s fell to ninth and $3.3 million. Documentary 2016: Obama’s America sank to 10th place with $3.2 million.

The big loser of the weekend was The Cold Light Of Day, which arrived in 13th place and only mustered up $1.8 million. Compare that to Raiders Of The Lost Ar****k, which was returning for a quick run in IMAX and made $1.7 million in 14th, despite only appearing on 267 screens compared to Day’s 1,511.
