Right from its debut on the festival circuit earlier this year, Portrait Of A Lady On Fire has been picking up rave reviews and plaudits pretty much wherever it goes. In the first few months of 2020, the latest film from Girlhood director Céline Sciamma will finally get a full UK release, giving the rest of us the chance to catch-up on one of the year’s most enthralling, sensory, purely cinematic treats. Empire has an exclusive first look at the UK trailer – watch it below.
Set in 1770, the film stars Noémie Merland as Marianne, a painter who travels to a remote island in Brittany when she’s commissioned to produce a portrait of Adèle Haenel’s Héloïse, a young woman who’s soon to be married. Instructed to create her painting in secret, Marianne finds herself closely observing Héloïse by day to try and capture her likeness, sparking an intense connection between the two women that flourishes. The film not only won Sciamma the Best Screenplay award at Cannes, but also the Queer Palm prize.
Portrait Of A Lady On Fire comes to UK cinemas on 28 February 2020 via Curzon, and will also be available to stream via Curzon Home Cinema’s on-demand service.
