In comics it’s Marvel vs DC. In video games it was Sega vs Nintendo. And in the world of buildable bricks, the central rivalry is LEGO vs. Playmobil (sorry, K’Nex). A few years after the Danish toy company made the leap to the big screen with The LEGO Movie and its two subsequent spin-offs, Playmobil is following suit with its very own cinematic offering. The first trailer for Playmobil: The Movie is here and… well, we’ll let you decide for yourself how it, ahem, stacks up.
The premise is in some ways similar to 2014’s LEGO Movie, with characters venturing through a series of Playmobil-created landscapes (including, notably, a Wild West one) on a quest. Except this time, it seems Anya Taylor-Joy’s Maria and her brother Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) have been physically sucked into the Playmobil world and emerged as action figures. Also in the cast are Daniel Radcliffe and Kenan Thompson, as well as singers Adam Lambert and Meghan Trainor.
Will Playmobil: The Movie provide a worthy competitor to the enjoyably inventive and consistently funny LEGO films? We'll find out when it assembles in UK cinemas on 9 August 2019.
