If there’s one Pixar movie that audiences have truly demanded a sequel to, it’s Brad Bird’s fantastic superhero family outing The Incredibles. If you count yourself among that number, prepare to be pleased, because Disney boss Robert Iger has announced that the Emeryville gang is officially developing a new film, with Bird writing the script.
Yes, as announced by Iger at a shareholders meeting, The Incredibles 2 will be hitting our screens, though we don’t yet know when. Bird, of course, is also busy with his second live-action film, and is busy in post-production on the George Clooney-starring Tomorrowland. That’ll arrive in May 2015, after which Bird will hopefully turn his attention full time to working on the new Incredibles pic.
In related news, the company is also starting the early construction work on a third Cars film. Despite a far less friendly critical reaction to both the 2006 original and the 2011 sequel, there’s no arguing with the impact the movies have had on the bottom line for Disney-Pixar. The Cars franchise has spawned squillions in merchandising, launched spin-off film series Planes and is a central part of Disney’s California Adventure theme park. So... yeah. If you have kids that love Lightning, Mater and the rest, you’ll probably be happy with that.
If not, you may find yourself on a bus, screaming your feelings to the shock and consternation of your fellow passengers. But if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to go back to excitedly awaiting any further news about The Incredibles 2. And listening to Michael Giacchino's score on repeat.
