From the sounds of early reactions, Pixar has thwarted the doomsayers once again, making something heartfelt and worthwhile with Toy Story 4. And one new addition is already garnering attention: Forky, the confused/nervous spork "toy" voiced by Tony Hale. In fact, he's been popular enough before the movie is even out that Pixar's team has been working on short films featuring the cutlery character.
Sounding a little like something that would show up later on the home entertainment release of the movie, the shorts will instead premiere on the Disney+ streaming service. "It’s a series called Forky Asks A Question," says producer Mark Nielsen announced at a press conference at Walt Disney World in Orlando, "and there are 10 episodes that will be on Disney+ when it comes live in November."
"I love it" added Hale, "it’s these questions that maybe people are embarrassed maybe to ask, but they really don’t know, and I learned so much just from all these simple questions that I probably should know, and I didn’t." With no current plans for a fifth Toy Story film (though never say never, because a forth was never certain and here we are), it'll mean an opportunity to keep hearing from favourite characters, who will pop up in the shorts go help Forky understand the world he's living in. Even if he's not sure why he's living...
Toy Story 4 hits UK cinemas next week.
