Piranha 3D Sequel Announced

A bad start at the box office usually means that your chances of seeing a sequel to a movie fall somewhere between “unlikely” and “fuhgeddaboutit”. But the producers behind killer fish camp/gore –fest Piranha 3D have decided to ignore the fact that the movie arrived in sixth place across the pond this weekend and instead ride the wave of critical glee to announce a follow-up.

“After earning rave reviews from top critics, wild cheers from audiences around the country, and $10 million in its opening weekend box office, Dimension Films is pleased to announce that **Piranha 3D: The Sequel **is in the works. Producer Mark Canton stated, ‘We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.’”

He’s right about the critical response; most reviews (even the negative ones) have pegged it as silly fun. And it wasn’t exactly the most expensive film, costing approximately $24 million to make.

So expect the next one either next year or for 2012, and a jump in employment prospects for hungry, tooth-stuffed fish.

But surely the campaign should start here for James Cameron to direct the sequel, given that his career sort-of started with Piranha 2: The Spawning...
