It may have been moved back on the schedule to make way for Lego Batman’s new solo spin-off adventure, but The Lego Movie’s follow-up does not seem to be suffering for it. In fact, the sequel has now scored the services of its parent film’s co-writers and directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, for script duties.

The increasingly in-demand pair, who are developing new projects and helping Warner Bros. develop a slate of animated output, both spawned from their success with** The Lego Movie** and other ideas, wrote the first film with the assistance of Dan and Kevin Hageman, were already aboard to produce the sequel. It doesn’t currently have a director attached, so there’s a chance the duo might return given that the sequel doesn’t have to hit cinemas until 2018. Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan were initially on board to write the film, and given that they’re also part of the animation “brain trust” at the studio, they’ll likely still be helping out.

Chris McKay, who had been in the sequel's director's chair, has hopped off to oversee the Batman spin-off, itself dated for 2017, with Ninjago headed to cinemas in 2016.

Elsewhere, Lord and Miller are producing Will Forte TV comedy The Last Man On Earth and a film adaptation of Graeme Simsion’s novel The Rosie Project. They may also play a part in the recently announced 23 Jump Street, assuming that happens.
