Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson book series is an enormously popular (and bestselling) set of novels that blend Greek mythology, history, and wit. On screens, Riordan's work has so far amounted to two films in a planned franchise that didn't go further. But with Disney now in charge of the rights (via its purchase of Fox), a small screen series will land on Disney+
As Riordan and his wife Becky announced via Twitter, a campaign that drew plenty of fan interest has now resulted in Disney commissioning a live-action series that will cover a book per season, starting with the first, The Lightning Thief.
The story finds 12-year-old Percy Jackson discovering he is a son of the Greek god Poseidon, and a demi-god with his own powers. He makes friends with other godly spawn and faces a series of challenges, with Riordan all the while slipping in education under the guise of entertainment.
It would seem to be early days on this one, with no word on a creative team and anywhere near casting yet. But fans may finally get the Percy Jackson adaptation they've wanted.
