Burgess Meredith has died in Malibu aged 89. His son Jonathan said his father suffered from Alzheimer's disease, melanoma, and other complications from old age. Meredith made his film debut in 1936 with Winterset, after starting out as a newspaper reporter. Top roles included Of Mice and Men and The Story of G.I. Joe. By the sixties, he made the jump to the small screen, appearing memorably as the Penguin next to various signs saying "Ker-pow" and "Ssssplatt". Recognition came in the mid-seventies with Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations The Day of the Locust and Rocky. How would Rocky have coped against Apollo without Mickey?
