Pearl Harbor Breaks Records

Jerry Bruckheimer et al must be breathing a sigh of relief this week with the news that their World War II behemoth Pearl Harbor smashed box office records in its opening weekend. The $135 million movie enjoyed the highest ever non-sequel 4-day opening with a huge $60 million take at the US box office this weekend. So that's the good news, but Buena Vista must be cursing fellow distributors Dreamworks for putting up the animated Shrek against Pearl Harbor. Excellent word of mouth meant that Shrek took a further $54 million over the American bank holiday weekend - money which Buena Vista had hoped would fall into their coffers.
