There's nothing we at Empire enjoy more on a Friday morning than the release of a brand spanking new trailer. It's a pleasing way to usher in the weekend and we can all sit around the computer watching it instead of actually working - which, let's face it, Fridays are simply not intended for. However, the full trailer for Catwoman is such that even transcribing that long overdue Vin Diesel interview seems like a pleasing alternative. The teaser left us sceptical but this first full look at Pitof's adaptation has only strengthened doubts over how well the comic franchise will survive the trip from page to screen. Looking for all the world like an episode of (thankfully) cancelled TV series Birds of Prey, the films appears to have all but avoided exploration of Catwoman's darker side, which is what made DC's feline heroine so interesting in the first place. Bar a couple of obligatory CG-assisted kung fu sequences, there's little here to impress and less still to suggest that Halle Berry has truly sunk her claws into the role. And with a costume more likely to provoke unwanted erections in the criminal element than anything approaching fear, we don't see Catwoman going down in history as one of the screen's most impressive superheroes. Note: the ability to land on one's feet is not an especially intimidating power. But, as with all such things, it's worth bearing in mind that this is just a trailer and there's still hope that it might all turn out okay. Maybe. However unlikely.
