As studios and other companies look for sources to turn into movies and TV series, podcasts have become a rich vein to tap. The latest making transition from the audio format is The Shrink Next Door, which will become a miniseries starring Anchorman cohorts Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell.
The show is described as a dark comedy following the bizarre relationship between psychiatrist to the stars Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf (Rudd), and his longtime patient Martin “Marty” Markowitz (Ferrell). Over the course of their relationship, the all-too-charming Ike slowly takes over Marty’s life, even moving into Marty’s home and taking over his family business. The series explores how a seemingly normal doctor-patient dynamic morphs into an unprecedentedly exploitative one filled with manipulation, power grabs, and dysfunction at its finest.
The Big Sick's Michael Showalter will direct the show, which features a script by Succession's Georgia Pritchett. There's no word yet on where the show itself might land, but we'd expect a channel or streaming service to snap it up soon enough.
