The latest Netflix backed film on the streaming service hopefully looks like it'll sidestep the potentially mawkish scenes you might expect from a carer bonding with a teenager in a wheelchair. See what you think by watching the trailer for The Fundamentals Of Caring below.
It helps that the young man in question is played with caustic humour by Craig Roberts, and that the carer he's forming an unexpected connection with is Paul Rudd. The story finds Rudd's Ben dealing with a personal tragedy and a divorce he doesn't want to face by enrolling in a care-giving class. His first assignment is Trevor (Roberts), a picky, critical muscular dystrophy patient who hasn't exactly endeared himself to the earnest sorts who have tried to befriend him in the past.
With his no-nonsense mother Elsa (Jennifer Ehle) hovering, the pair decides to go on a road trip, where they meet Dot (Selena Gomez), initially concerned that one or both of the guys might be a pervert, but eventually charmed by Trevor's particular sense of humour.
Adapted from Jonathan Evison's novel and directed by Rob Burnett, The Fundamentals Of Caring will be on Netflix on June 24.
