Though he’s not sure he wants to make the sequel to Bridesmaids, Universal appears intent on keeping director Paul Feig in their address book. The studio has now hired him to direct romantic comedy The Better Woman.
Amy Sherman-Palladino (still best known for ace TV series Gilmore Girls) is working up a script that finds a high-powered young business executive going through a breakup. When she finds that her former boyfriend left her for an older woman, she decides to befriend the new romantic rival and learn just why she won the guy’s heart. What she doesn’t expect is to change her own life in the process.
According to Variety, the idea originated with Ron Bass (Entrapment) and newcomer Jen Smolka. At one point, Reese Witherspoon had been considering nabbing the lead, but she’s since dropped out.
It remains to be seen whether Better Woman is actually Feig’s next pic – he’s got plenty of other options, including a mysterious comedy reboot he’s been planning for a while, a project with John Hamm attached and Dumb Jock, which has Bridesmaids breakout Melissa McCarthy in the lead.
