There was a time when we all looked upon films based on toy products largely with scorn and suspicion, particularly if they didn’t immediately lend themselves to narrative ideas. And then came The Lego Movie, and now we live in a world where a plaything-spawned movie launches a franchise. And one in which Hasbro and Fox are talking to Paul Feig about directing a live-action Play-Doh film.

The company, which has spearheaded movies based on the Transformers and G.I. Joe among others, is partnering with Fox to turn the squishy clay stuff into some sort of film, with the Bridesmaids director (who is also producing a movie based on the Snoopy universe) negotiating to take on the job. Meetings have apparently already been held to thrash out an idea, with Jason Micallef on board to take the first crack at the script.

What that idea might be is anyone’s guess outside of the inner circle, we’d assume the flexibility of Play-Doh means the story can go in many directions. Naturally, not every film can be The Lego Movie, but Feig’s a smart filmmaker, so we shall remain hopeful. Honestly, though, we feel like the best bet is to join forces with Aardman Animation, which has led the field in Claymation for years. Play-Doh/Morph crossover, anyone? Kids, ask your parents...
