Much of the talk around Matt ReevesThe Batman has concerned the comic book arcs it references. As ever, there’s a bit of Batman: Year One, a dollop of The Long Halloween, a hefty dose of Earth One, and some Batman: Ego in there too. But now, there’s something else – a comic inspired by, and specifically linked to, The Batman. Not only that, but it’s written by one of its stars. DC has confirmed that Paul Dano himself has written a comic titled Riddler: Year One – and it’s heading our way later this year.

Little is known about the book, but that title implies a backstory for Dano’s character in the film – a vicious serial killer with a thing for leaving messages ‘to The Batman’ at his crime scenes. And while we get a sense of his life prior to the movie over its three-hour runtime (no spoilers here, don’t worry), there’s definitely more to be learned on the page. And it’s fascinating that Dano himself has penned this – though there’s no word yet on the fellow artists involved in the making of the series. All we do know is that it’ll hit shelves in October, so there’s a good while to wait yet.

For now, Warner Bros is yet to confirm an official sequel to The Batman – but the signs are looking good, with the film surpassing the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office. Either way, this comic shows there’s more to come from Reeves’ Bat-verse yet – whether you get a physical copy of the comic, a digital edition, or read it on a thumb drive. Bring on the riddles.
