The British tabloids are pitching it as a battle to the death (of a reputation). Their big question is will Gwyneth Paltrow or Madonna be the belle of the London stage? Going on last night's reviews for Paltrow's play, which was first to hit the critics, Gywneth has the definite edge. Although a number of the nation's critics carped about the actual play, Proof, which was helmed by Paltrow's Shakespeare In Love director John Madden, almost all of them were universal in their praise for the American actress. 'There was no doubt whatever that Paltrow thoroughly deserved her standing ovation,' enthused The Daily Telegraph. 'Those who fell in love with her in Shakespeare in Love with do so all over again.' 'Paltrow, in short, is not just a star: she can really act,' was The Guardian's verdict. The Independent also agreed that she made an 'arresting impression.' 'She really cuts the mustard,' said The Daily Mail, '[coming] through with flying colours.' The one dissenting voice was The Times, whose critic picked on Gwynnie's 'limited range,' dismissing her by saying, 'She always looks too clean. Give or take the odd little outburst, she sounds too clean, too.'
