He's taken on an evil taxidermist Nicole Kidman. He's bested Hugh Grant's thespian ne'er-do-well Phoenix Buchanan. Now, in Dougal Wilson's eagerly anticipated Paddington threequel Paddington In Peru, our beloved Ben Whishaw voiced bear is set to face his biggest foe yet. No, not Olivia Colman's seriously sus singing nun, or Antonio Banderas' riverboat captain for that matter (though we've got our eye on them both), but rather... a photo booth? Yup, you heard us right, folks. In the latest teaser for the sequel to one of the greatest movies of all time, we see Paddington helplessly tangle with a passport picture kiosk to admittedly quite hilarious effect. Check it out for yourself:
Oh Paddington, never change! Sure, this clip really does put the emphasis on the teaser in 'teaser trailer', but let's be honest, we were already well in the tank for more pratfalls and adventuring whimsy with our favourite Peruvian bear and the Browns, weren't we? Besides, this bit — brief as it may be — offers a hearty reassurance that whilst Paul King has abdicated the Paddington directorial throne (and Sally Hawkins has done the ol' switcheroo with Emily Mortimer as Mrs Brown), it's business as charm-your-socks-off usual for writers Mark Burton, Jon Foster, and James Lamont and incoming helmsman Wilson. And who among us hasn't forgotten to take the marmalade sandwich off their head before taking a passport piccy at least once before, eh? Eh? Okay, just us and the bear then...
Elsewhere, whilst we only get a brief glimpse of the returning Brown brood (and Julie Walters' Mrs. Bird, of course!), we do see our homeward bound bear getting all tangled up in telephone wire aboard a Peruvian riverboat, promising the slapstick is still absolutely going to slap third time around. Here's the official synopsis: “Paddington In Peru brings Paddington's story to Peru as he returns to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now resides at the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown Family in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mystery plunges them into an unexpected journey through the Amazon rainforest and up to the mountain peaks of Peru.”
Adventure? Check. Marmalade sandwiches? Check. The promise of an emotional reunion with Paddington's dear Aunt Lucy that will have us bawling our eyes out at CGI bears? That'll be a check, too. All of which is to say it looks like we're still on for a new contender for all-time greatest movie trilogy. We'll find out whether Paddington In Peru is as sweet as marmalade or a bit of a sticky mess when the movie hits UK cinemas on 8 November.
