With more than $208 million in the bank worldwide and a raft of positive reactions behind it, the team who brought Paddington on to the big screen is in the early days of talking about a sequel.
Speaking at the Berlin Film Festival, StudioCanal boss Olivier Courson told Variety that the company is in discussions with producer David Heyman for a further film chronicling the adventures of the furry traveller.
The first one, which overcame early worries and turned out to be a charm-filled delight, served as an origin story for Paddington (voiced in the film by Ben Whishaw) and followed him from Darkest Peru to his new home with the Brown family in London. After close shave with a scheming taxidermist (played by Nicole Kidman) he was finally able to settle in with the family.
As to what might happen in the new film? That’s still too early to say, since there isn’t even a deal in place for the second outing. But Heyman and co. will likely look to reunite director Paul King (who is even more in demand these days) and a cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville and Julie Walters for another marmalade-powered romp.
