Champagne corks will once more be popping around Disney’s offices this week as Oz The Great And Powerful continues to bewitch audiences, holding on to the top spot in the US box office for a second week and adding $42.2 million for a running total of $145 million in the States alone. The film’s success meant the newcomers had to make do with second and third place, but Halle Berry and director Brad Anderson will be happy with how many people took The Call, as the kidnap thriller earned $17.1 million in its first weekend.
Less thrilled, we imagine, is Steve Carell, who saw magician comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderston****e prove to be less than wondrous. It opened in third with $10.3 million, below studio expectations.** Jack The Giant Slayer **slipped to fourth with $6.2 million, and Identity Thief was fifth with $4.5 million.
Dwayne Johnson drama thriller Snitch took sixth, earning $3.5 million, ahead of 21 And Over, which made $2.6 million in seventh. Silver Linings Playbook clung to eighth like a barnacle, adding $2.5 million for a $124.6 million total to date, while Safe Haven was ninth with $2.4 million and Escape From Planet Earth fell to 10th with $2.3 million.
