Fantasy films may not be a sure thing at the moment – Jack The Giant Slayer’s box office results proved that last week – but it appears there’s some magic left in Oz. Disney’s latest walk down the Yellow Brick Road with Oz The Great And Powerful opened across the pond to a successful $80 million. It’ll need to show legs to make back a reported $200 million plus production budget (not to mention the massive marketing spend), but the Mouse House is already at work on a sequel.
Jack at least managed to avoid dropping too far, slipping to second for $10 million, which kept it ahead of Identity Thief at third with $6.3 million. The new Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace thriller Dead Man Down, meanwhile, opened in fourth place, earning $5.3 million. Snitch rounded out the top five with $5.1 million.
In sixth we find 21 And Over, which made $5 million, with Safe Haven in seventh earning $3.8 million. Eighth place went once more to Silver Linings Playbook, likely enjoying a boost from Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar win. The drama took in $3.7 million. CG ‘toon Escape From Planet Earth was ninth with $3.2 million, while The Last Exorcism Part II dropped to 10th with $3.1 million.
