Since we’ve all been trapped in our homes more or less for the past year, you might be feeling a little claustrophobic right now. If that’s you, you probably shouldn’t check out the trailer for Alexandre Aja’s new movie Oxygen – but for everyone else, especially those who revelled in the skin-crawling effectiveness of films like Buried and The Descent, take a look at the horror director’s latest film for Netflix. This one stars Mélanie Laurent as a woman who wakes up in some kind of medical cocoon, with no memory of who she is or why she’s there, and a rapidly-depleting dial telling her that she’s about to run out of air. Watch the trailer here:
This one looks like it could be pleasantly unpleasant, from a filmmaker who last delivered the lean and mean chompy-alligator creature feature Crawl. And there’s a nice dual-plot ticking away in this one, not only about how exactly Laurent’s Elizabeth is meant to survive once that percentage reaches zero, but unpicking the mystery of her own identity and why she’s there in the place.
Oxygen was written by Christie LeBlanc, and also features Mathieu Amalric among its cast. The film comes to Netflix from 12 May – try and hold your breath until then, OK?
