No Oscar For Ewan

Moulin Rouge duet barred from awards

The warbling efforts of Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge may have entered the pop charts in the UK and Australia, but apparently they haven't a hope of winning an Oscar next year. That's because of a bizarre rule that prevents a song being entered for the Best Song Oscar where it wasn't written for the original film. Come What May was written by David Baerwald for a Baz Luhrmann film - but for his earlier movie Romeo + Juliet, rather than Moulin Rouge in which it actually appeared. 'It's crazy,' Luhrmann complains to US magazine Entertainment Weekly, 'because in musicals historically, you're always using well-loved songs. White Christmas (which won an Oscar in 1943) appeared in several films.'
