Is it just us, or is it getting crazier out there? As awards season ramps up, the biggest set of nominations in the business have just been revealed – and leading the Oscars race this year is none other than Joker. Todd Phillips’ reimagining of the classic DC Comics villain received 11 nominations – including Best Film, Directing, Cinematography, Adapted Screenplay, Editing, and a nod for Joaquin Phoenix in Leading Actor.
Hot on its heels are the likes of 1917, The Irishman and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which each received 10 nominations. On that front there were few upsets – each of the three jostling in Best Picture, Directing, Cinematography and more, with acting nominations for The Irishman’s Joe Pesci and Al Pacino in Supporting Actor, Leonardo DiCaprio up for Leading Actor for OUATIH, and his co-star Brad Pitt among the Supporting Actor nominees. Once again though, Robert De Niro has been missed out of the acting categories – as he had been in the BAFTA and Golden Globes lists.
Following the #BAFTAssowhite controversy last week, this year’s list of Academy Award nominees is less egregious – among the acting nominations is a nod for Cynthia Erivo in Harriet, though Jennifer Lopez, Awkwafina and Lupita Nyong’o all missed out despite their acclaimed performances in Hustlers, The Farewell and Us respectively.
In fact, The Farewell was snubbed altogether – as was Uncut Gems, which failed to register in any category. More impressive are the six nominations garnered by Parasite, which became a rare foreign-language film to break the Best Picture category. It also made it into the newly-renamed International Feature Film list, with Bong Joon Ho nabbing nominations for Directing and Original Screenplay alongside co-writer Jin Won Han.
As with this year’s other awards shows, the list of directors ended up being all-male – with the likes of Greta Gerwig (who at least was nominated for Adapted Screenplay), Lulu Wang, Joanna Hogg, and Marielle Heller all missing out. It still looks to be a tightly-contested race, with Scorsese, Tarantino and Bong facing off against Sam Mendes and Todd Phillips.
On the blockbuster front, Avengers: Endgame only managed a nomination in Visual Effects, while Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker received recognition in Original Score, Sound Editing, and Visual Effects.
Will Joker spark a riot on Oscar night? Will 1917 sweep the board in one, unbroken run? Will the toast of Hollywood reward a film quite literally titled Once Upon A Time In Hollywood? We’ll find out with the Academy Awards ceremony airs on 9 February.
