Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona was responsible for arguably the scariest horror fillum of last year – the butt-clenchingly tense The Orphanage. And now, without any further ado, he’s taking his mad scream-inducing skillz across the Atlantic to Hollywood.

But if you’re about to yell ‘sell-out’, then don’t bother. For Bayona has signed on to direct Hater, a thriller which will be produced by his old mucker and The Orphanage collaborator, Mr. Guillermo del Toro.

Based on a book by British author, David Moody, Hater concerns an epidemic of violence perpetrated by seemingly ordinary people which has a profound effect on society.

Del Toro had been linked with the directing job at one point, before The Hobbit and approximately 1,294 other projects took precedence for the Mexican genius. But, along with Mark Johnson, he remained as producer on the movie and has wasted no time in giving Bayona a crack at the English-language market.

But Bayona may find himself on home soil when the movie starts shooting, with Johnson hoping that the interiors can be shot in Spain, with the exteriors on location in the States. Filming will start next year.
