He's not usually seen on TV outside of talk shows, guest appearances and the odd spot on the likes of Joe Swanberg's Easy, but Orlando Bloom is throwing himself into his first major small screen role. He'll star in Amazon's Carnival Row.
Long in development as a film, Travis Beacham's script A Killing On Carnival Row eventually ended up – thanks to the efforts of the writer and producer/champion Guillermo del Toro – heading for an eight-episode first run of episodes on the streaming service.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Teen Wolf veteran René Echevarria is overseeing the series alongside Beacham, spinning a fantasy noir story set in a neo-Victorian city called the Burge. It's become something of a refuge for mythical creatures on the run from their war-torn homeland, but now the streets are fraught with terror as a killer is stalking nonhumans.
Bloom will play Rycroft Philostrate a police inspector investigating the latest slaying, of a faerie showgirl. While he's not supposed to get personally involved, he digs deeper into the case than might be sensible. Looking to put a fantastical spin on immigrant issues, the show is coming together quickly but has yet to confirm a launch date.
Last seen reprising his role as Will Turner in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge, Bloom will be seen in Romans and S.M.A.R.T. Chase.
